Election Day!!

Today was an exciting day for our country as we had the opportunity to exercise our right as citizens to vote for the next leader of our country. Today our students were given an opportunity to learn about what it means to vote and the privilege we are given to participate in such a big moment in our country's history. Our class learned that all Americans have the right to vote, however they can choose not to. We also learned that it is important to RESPECT everyone else's opinions and values. Even when others do not believe in the same things we can still show them respect and disagree with kindness. Our class also learned that NO MATTER WHAT (whether their choice for president wins or looses) the results are met with class and respect.

I was out of class today and really missed not having the opportunity to be there with the class while having this great discussion and learning opportunity with our friends. I can't help but think of the futures for all of these kiddos and wonder what those futures hold for them. Who knows, the next President of the United States of America could be among us! How exciting is that to think about!!! What an exciting time to help teach these children about the freedoms they have growing up in this country (more about our freedoms and honoring our heroes to come later this week)!!!

Our class, along with Mrs. Powell's class, participated in our own election for president. Our friends learned about the process of voting, and who the candidates were that they were voting for (without getting into the policies and platforms of each candidate). We voted between Donald Trump, Hillary Clinton, Jill Stein, and Gary Johnson, as well as having the opportunity for a write in ballot. Our friends learned about how our votes are secret and are not shared with the other voters. After recess, our class got to visit Mrs. Powell's class and have a big FIRST GRADE MEETING to learn the results of their votes...... THIS JUST IN.... according to our first graders, the majority voted Trump for President. As you will see from the pictures below, our friends exercised their right to vote for their own PERSONAL CHOICE (we even had a first grader write in Mrs. Powell for President)! Our friends were pretty excited to show off their I VOTED TODAY stickers too! Additionally, our class wrote about what they felt were important aspects of the job of being President of the United states, telling what they would do if they were President!
