Throw a Little Kindness

Our latest goal has been to spread kindness whenever we can!! Kindness is such an important quality in a friend; whenever we discuss qualities of friends/friendship, kindness always seems to pop up. As part of our discussion, we talked to one another about times when friends were not so kind and how that made us feel.

As we did this, we crinkled up a paper heart and by the end there were SO many wrinkles and small rips that we could not fully get rid of, no matter how hard we tried to flatten in out. We noticed that the hurtful things that we do or say and those that others do to us really make a negative impact. After seeing how negative/hurtful things can feel, we then listened to a story called Each Kindness. This story did a fantastic job and showing how our actions affect others and how being kind really does ripple out and affect others in a more positive way. We are now focusing on ways we can be extra kind to others! You can listen to the story here:

On Monday of this week, our school counselor, Ms. Brown came to visit our class. She talked about what her role is at Forest View and how she can help us.

Together they talked about various worries they have/have had and how she can help when they may have worries or some things they feel they just need to talk to someone about. She read a lovely story called Wemberly Worried to the class to kick off their talk and how worries can negatively affect you, as well as positive and helpful ways to cope and get rid of those worries. You can see the story here:

This week we celebrated Fire Safety with Cherry Grove Fire Department. We always love our visits from the fire department and being able to see the fire engines and fire fighters show us all of their gear. Of course the purpose of their presentation is to reinforce the importance of fire safety and prevention and what you should do in the event of a fire. Make sure to talk to your child about your family plan in case there were a fire!!

Along with early dismissals and fire safety, this week also brought a ton of excitement with the addition of 7 (say what?!) new friends (aka hermit crabs) to our classroom!!!!!

We were ecstatic on Thursday when everyone entered the room to find that we had 7 new hermit crabs join our class (there are lots more in other classes as well)!! Much of our morning was spent exploring their terrarium, watching them move and hide, examining their shells, and more.

Built in to our morning was time to actually name each of the crabs. It was a fun process of brainstorming ideas and voting on names that should go with each one. Here they are:

I had so much fun seeing their excitement and was so happy to see each one of them proud to show them off at conferences. Later in the morning, we watched a story called A House for Hermit Crab. This is a cute story about a hermit crab who determines that he needs to find a new home (shell) because his is too small. In his search for his new home he meets new friends along the way. We watched the story and then talked about making text-to-self connections to the story. We discussed that this means thinking about the message a story has to offer and applying in to our own lives. After this discussion, everyone had the opportunity to make text-to-self connections where they wrote about a time they made a new friend and what they liked to do with them. They also made further connections and told why friendship is so important.

Listen to the story here:

Thank you to all who were able to make it to conferences and to those who I met with at other times. I love having the opportunity to share your child's strengths and areas of growth with you. I also LOVE seeing your child shine and get excited to show and tell you about their classroom.

Don't forget, K/1 has been tasked with collecting capri sun juices for our annual Halloween Hike treat. If you are able to send in a box or 2 we would greatly appreciate the donation!

We are selling Boo Grams as a first grade fund raiser. I am in need of 1 more volunteer for each day on October 28th, 29th, and 30th. If you are able to come in and help sell boo grams from 11:30-12:45 on any of those days
