The Amazing Human Body

I hope that you have been hearing all about our latest literacy unit from your child, the human body! We have been thoroughly enjoying learning all about the amazing systems at work in our bodies. We have learned about our skeletal system, muscular system, digestive system, circulatory system, and nervous system, as well as a ton of important things about keeping our amazing bodies healthy and strong!

We had so much fun spending time this week creating paper bag body demonstrations, with 'working lungs.' On Friday, we took a trip through the school, visiting all of the classrooms and showing off our hard work and a fun song too !

We are excited to move back into fiction this week as we begin exploring fairy tales and the multiple versions from around the world!

This week also brought on our very first STEM Wednesday. We were very generously gifted a variety of STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) activities by very generous donors through a Donors Choose grant this summer. We have learned all of our first grade rules and expectations for the use of these materials and were SO excited to begin using them. We are looking forward to the opportunity to meet with Mrs. Heystek's class EVERY Wednesday afternoon to work collaboratively to imagine, create and develop/enhance our problem solving skills.

Gears were a big hit!

These two girls were SO proud of the playground they created!

Hans was hard at work, problem solving and making many adjustments to his marble run to make it successful!

I can't wait to continue our STEM Wednesday tradition and allow these thinkers the opportunity to expand their thinking and problems solving, through a creative means! Just imaging the futures that these bright young boys and girls have in front of them!

I hope you are having fun coming up with a plan with your child for the pumpkin project! This is one of my favorite things we do in first grade every year. I love the hard work that is put in to each project and how it provides you the opportunity to get creative with your child! Rest assured, your child will come to school SO incredibly proud of their pumpkins and eager to show them off! We will be working on the book report portion of the project this week and pumpkins will be on display starting Friday when you send them in! I loved all of the book choices that came in and cannot wait to see the finished products! Remember, if there are certain materials that you are in need of, I am more than happy to send them home for you to use... if I already have them in the classroom art cupboard. If I do not have them, think cheap as the Dollar Store can be a great place to find simple and cheap materials for your pumpkins! Check back here for all of the project details.

As a reminder, we are selling BOO GRAMS October 28th-31st. I am searching for one more volunteer on October 30th from 11:30-12:45. If you are able to help out please let me know!
