Beautiful Weather and Learning FUN!
What a beautiful week! We LOVED all of the warm weather we had and the chance to be able to outside and play in the fresh air! I loved reading all of our friends stories about what they did on their day off on Tuesday! It sounds like our friends had a lot of fun having family time. Some even said they went hunting with their dads....what a great learning experience! We may not be in the classroom, but we are still able to have great learning experiences at home!
This week we had a lot of fun talking about fairy tales. We focused on the story Little Red Riding Hood. We focused in on the character traits of Little Red Riding Hood, the setting, characters, problem and solution and also spent time writing about Little Red. Additionally, we read a different version of the story - Petite Rouge, A Cajun Red Riding Hood. We had a lot of fun listening to the different dialect the story was written in and hearing how the story could be told in a different way. On Thursday, we spent some time comparing and contrasting the two stories. We also learned 5 new vocabulary words:
Sly - Clever in a dishonest way
Visit - to go see/spend time with
Crept - move slowly and carefully
Winding - a twisty movement or path
Thoughtful - to think of others
This week we finished up Unit 2 in math. Our class has been working hard using the various strategies we have been working on and it is paying off! I have seen some definite improvement from our pretest! After our hard work and focused test time on Friday, we were able to enjoy the beautiful weather outside (we know there may not be many days left like this for a while) and had some extra play time outside of our classroom and on the playground.
We finished our focus on H-Brothers this week with wh and ph. Both of these sounds are tricky and difficult to master. Our class did quite well, especially with not having school on Tuesday! These would be great skills to keep working on at home, along with our other H-brothers; th, sh, and ch. We will be taking a week off from spelling and phonics next week due to Thanksgiving and will resume the following week with a new phonics focus!
During Science this week we continued looking into the study of Sound. We learned four new vocabulary words. We put these words into practice by experimenting with a variety of tuning forks, all of different lengths. This allowed us to hear a difference in pitch made by sound waves, feel the vibration, and to hear the volume change depending on how hard we tapped the fork on the ground! Next week we will continue discussing these words in different ways!
We concluded our week with some quiet time reading to self, enjoying our Friday afternoon popcorn and then ended our day with a visit from our 4th grade Reading Buddies! It is always a highlight of our day when we have a chance to buddy up with the older students and read together! Our friends talked about it ALL day, as soon as they saw it on the schedule in the morning!
As a reminder, we have a variety of things going on next week:
* Monday - Late Start - school begins at 10:05
* Tuesday - First Grade Thanksgiving Feast. THANK YOU to all parents who have signed up to send in food on that day. Without you none of this would be possible!
* Wednesday - Forest View's annual Thanksgiving Food Drive. We are trying to collect canned or boxed foods that will be donated to deserving families in our community. We will still be collecting cans all week. If you have extra soups, veggies, fruits, etc. at home or would like to pick some extras up at the store please consider donating!
Enjoy your weekend and stay warm (I wish the warm weather would stay but I think it is winding down)!
Here is a peak at our afternoon of read to self and the time spent with our reading buddies!
