Learning to be Reflective

Thank you SO much for taking the time to come to school this week for conferences. It was a delight observing these Firsties share their learning with you. Your kiddos are so proud of their learning and it showed when they told you about their growth and created goals on what they can do go improve! Remember to continue asking your child to tell you specific details about their learning! You might say things like....

* What are you most proud of? "I am most proud of ......"

*How can I help you become a better reader?

* What do you need the most help with at school?

This week we have had a lot of fun introducing decodable student readers into our spelling and phonics block. This means that all of the words in the stories can be read or sounded out because we have learned the phonics skills needed to read them. We are reading a book called Snap Shots. We have learned that a snap shot is another term for picture. We are reading small stories or snap shots about a character and learning how to apply our phonics skills in our reading. We listen to the story first, then echo read (Mrs. Quist reads first then we echo the way she reads - with expression!), finally we get to read the story with our partner!

Here you can see Jayda reading to her partner Izzy. We always make sure we are fallowing along in the story with our partner to help them if they get stuck on a word.

Our class has been very engaged in math so far and are extremely excited to begin learning strategies to add and subtract to 20. We are still working on building fluency with adding and subtracting within 10 as well. We want to know our math facts quickly! As always, we enjoy applying our knowledge in math stations at the end of our lessons! This week we even had the opportunity to practice our math skills on the computer with skill-specific math games!

On Friday, we revisited one of our favorite Folktales, The Tale of Peter Rabbit.

We learned that good readers connect with stories, which is called making Text-to-Self connections. We talked and wrote about a time when we were mischievous or naughty and the lesson we learned. It is awesome to see those text-to-self connections being made!

We have been making sure to get outside and enjoy the beautiful fall weather as well! We love earning extra time outside when we work really hard!

Don't forget about our upcoming opportunities! We are thrilled to begin a new tradition at Forest View with a Halloween Hike and Wax Museum! It is going to be so fun dressing in Halloween Themed - orange/black/headbands/ect. - clothing (if you wish) and walking through our nature trail searching for halloween surprises along the way!

Our next scholastic book order is due on the 27th. Every order helps! We earn points for each dollar spent, which are redeemed for more books for our classroom!

Please keep saving your BoxTops for Education! Each box top counts! We will be spending our box top money for our classroom as well. Our first due date is going to be October 25th. I would love to incorporate additional flexible seating options in our classroom and this is one way to help do that!

Thank you for supporting our first grade fundraiser at conferences and purchasing Boo Grams with your child! It is such a fun treat receiving Boo Grams around Halloween! This can be a huge money maker for first grade and Mrs. Powell and I love finding fun and exciting things we can purchase with money for not only your firsties to use but for future classes as well! Thank you for your support! Boo Grams will be sold again on October 25th, 26th, 27th, and 30th!

Forest View will be hosting a Culver's Night on November 2nd. 10% of proceeds brought in during this fundraiser will be given back to the school and will be put into our PBIS fund. We will be able to continue purchasing individual student and school wide rewards with the money raised! Come out and let us serve you dinner!
