Our Body Systems

We have been busy learners this week as we have been building our knowledge on our Body Systems. We have been discussing our our bodies are a Network of Systems! This means that our organs work together (the systems) throughout our body to help keep our bodies (the network) alive and healthy! We have learned specifically about our Skeletal System, our Muscular System and our Digestive System so far. It has been a lot of fun learning new vocabulary and how our systems work together. If you haven't already, make sure to check out your child's seesaw videos - some friends put some awesome examples of how they have learned about these systems!

After learning about our skeletal system and finding our that we have 206 bones in our bodies, we introduced a new brain break that gets our skeletons moving...how fun!!!

Our friends enjoyed learning about their muscles and how they are important and work with the skeletal system to help us move.

We found out that a lot of our muscles are voluntary - which means we can control whether or not they move with our brain. For example, our arm and leg muscles are voluntary, as well as our facial muscles which help us communicate different emotions with others.

We learned that our most important muscle is our heart - it is an involuntary muscle. This means that the heart muscles beats automatically, all on its own, and keeps us alive!

Yesterday, we learned about the digestive system. This system was a little bit trickier to grasp, however we found out that digestion is the process that our body uses to break down the foods we eat and process their nutrients and vitamins into energy, which is carried through our bodies in our blood. Below you can see a quick video which talks about some of the information we learned.

Then...during snack we watched the Magic School Bus For Lunch (season 1, episode 2) that helped us continue learning about the digestive system. If you want, you can watch the episode below.

We learned that our food can stay in our bodies for up to 2 days and that our small intestines are about 15 feet long and are coiled (folded) inside our bodies)!

In math this week we have continued focusing on addition strategies and how find the unknown total, as well as how to count on from the bigger number. We have also learned what it means if equations are equal or not equal and how to explain WHY an equation is true or false. This is a tricky skill...not only to we have to know whether or not it is a true equation, but we must also put into words and explain why!

Today, we learned a new partner game in math. One partner spun 2 spinners and then the other partner had to put those two numbers into a number sentence. Next, we had to count on from the bigger number to solve for the unknown total!

We are getting SUPER excited about our upcoming Pumpkin Book Reports. Our friends came in today telling about the stories they chose and how they are going to decorate their pumpkin as the main character! Please remember to send in the slip telling me the title and author of your child's story. This will allow me to print off a picture of the story for your child to put on the bag of their book report pieces. Additionally, this slip has space for you to write a list of any materials you may need to help with the decorating process. I will try my best to get you the items you ask for, or as close to that as I can!

Our school as partnered with Smile Programs to offer in-school dental care. If your child does not see a dentist regularly or you would like them to see the in-school dentist, simply fill out a permission form. There may be no cost to you if your child is insured with Medicaid! Private insurance and affordable self-pay options are also available.

Having your child seen by the in-school dentist saves you valuable time. Top quality care is provided by local, licensed dentists right in the familiar surroundings of your child's school. Dental care includes a complete exam, x-rays, cleaning, fluoride, and sealants when needed, and in some cases, restorative care such as fillings.
