We're Nutty About Fall!

Our week has been packed with both learning opportunities as well as extra fun activities! Tuesday brought a lot of excitement as we looked forward to our Halloween Hike and Wax Museum tour in the afternoon. It was so nice maintaining a sense of normal flow throughout the morning and early afternoon even as we looked forward the upcoming activities! Some of our friends had seen the Wax Museum before, although not all had so it was a fun treat getting to see all of the 3rd grades dressed up and standing like statues as we toured their classrooms. Next, we took a walk out on the nature trail. Although it was cold and there was some very heavy, wet snow falling we had a blast! Our PTO did an AMAZING job decorating our trail! We enjoyed searching for things like cats and birds, skeletons in sunglasses, bats, ghosts, pumpkins and more. There was even a spot to stop and listen to some Halloween themed music!

After our walk we enjoyed a delicious, healthy snack of apples yogurt and toppings...and of course some yummy apple cider!

This was a great lead into our Reading focus this week. On Thursday we learned about and discussed the 5 Keys to Health. These keys include 1. Eating Healthy 2. Exercise 3. Rest 4. Staying Clean and 5. Going to the doctor for regular checkups. We discussed each of these guidelines and how they are all important and play a big role in our health. On Thursday afternoon we spent time writing about our keys to health and what they looked like and why they were important. Our friends were doing a very nice job at telling how they can eat healthy, ways they can exercise, how much sleep they should be getting each night, how they can stay clean to fight off germs and how visiting the doctor for checkups all keep them healthy! Make sure to check out our seesaw videos this week! There have been lots of new posts put up about our 5 Keys to Health! Monday's reading lesson focused on germs - very tiny living things that can sometimes make us sick! We learned all about two important germ fighters - Louis Pasture and Edward Jenner - who both made tremendous discoveries into the world of vaccinations and fighting diseases! We watched a magic school bus video about germs during snack this week also as a way of looking at germs from another lens.

Jared is busy adding detail to his video about Rest - the 3rd Key to Health!

Sarina is reviewing her own video to make sure it is exactly the way she wants it before she uploads it to seesaw! We are learning that sometimes we need to go back and edit our videos and make changes to make them better!

Caysen is enjoying watching completed videos made by friends and commenting on them.

Jayda and Bella are busy watching their friend's videos that have been posted and are commenting back to them!

Joey just finished his video and is waiting for it to upload so that he can make another one!

On Thursday morning we were able to participate in an assembly from a team called Stand Strong. These men came in with a great message about perseverance, showing kindness to others, respecting others with our actions and words and encouraging others. It was also a lot of fun watching them show off their strength by tearing a phone book in half, bending re-bar over their heads, tearing a license plate in half, crushing cement bricks and even picking up some of our Forest View students!

Our friends did a great job of listening to their positive and encouraging message throughout the assembly and did a nice job retelling the important information when we got back to our classroom.

We continued learning about and practicing subtraction this week and even watched a little video during math on Friday to help us remember!

We have also been working toward our first grade goal of counting to 100. You may have seen some seesaw videos of our child practicing this week. We have been working on counting and exercising as one of our math warm ups a couple of times a week as well. You can watch that here:

On Friday, we also got to break out our creative sides and create some fantastic artwork and writing for the hallway. We were able to create fall squirrels and tell all about how we are going nutty for fall. We wrote down all of the reasons why we love this time of the year and made sure to incorporate our writer's checklists that we have been working on (CAPS, ends.!, finger spaces, and best handwriting)!

Friday was met with excitement as always! We love the sound and smell of popcorn being made each week. We love to end our weeks with this fun treat and free choice time!

I would like to send out a couple of big shout-outs to our volunteers for helping during Boo Grams. Some of you were extremely busy and we appreciate your commitment to staying later than planned to deliver the grams! Mrs. Powell and I are looking forward to brainstorming ideas and purchasing high quality, fun materials for our classrooms!

I would also like to thank all of you who joined us at Culver's on Thursday night for our fundraiser! I was there delivering food from 6-7 and it was packed the whole time! What an awesome F.V. family we have here who are willing to support one another and help us raise money for our school!

Looking forward to next week:

1. We cannot wait to see you all at the high school auditorium on Monday at 9:45 to clap us in as our students arrive for our Blue Ribbon Award Assembly. This is a tremendous honor to have been nominated to receive and can't wait to celebrate that recognition with you! We have some fun things planned for our assembly and would love to have you join us! PLEASE SEND YOUR CHILD TO SCHOOL IN BLUE THAT DAY AND WEAR IT TOO IF YOU ARE JOINING US FOR THE FUN!

2. If you have not taken the survey that was sent out in last week's blog post please do so now by clicking here! Our PBIS team values your feedback on our school wide positive behavior supports!

3. Looking forward to next week Tuesday's bond vote:

The CAPS bond proposal is a comprehensive plan addressing the facility needs of the entire district, providing EVERY building much needed improvements. We have patched and repaired many buildings extending the life of mechanical systems, roofs and plumbing for more than 10 years. we spend well over a million dollars a year to keep buildings operational. It is time to replace not repair these systems. Four buildings can be sold, leaving the following buildings to serve our students and community:

*Kenwood - built in 1965 with an addition in 1979

*Franklin - built in 1958 with an addition of 6 classrooms in 1990

*Lincoln - built in 1958 with renovations in 1967 and 1998

*Forest View - built in 1968 with renovations in 1997

*MTMS - built in 1998

*CJH/CHS - built in 1953 with multiple renovations and additions

**Our buildings average over 50 years old!

***Please help to make a difference for our children and community!

We are looking forward to continuing our learning journey throughout this busy November month! Stay warm and start sending in your winter gear! Even without accumulated snow those who are nicely bundled are able to stay much warmer in the cold weather!
