A Blue Ribbon Celebration

This week has been packed with fun opportunities! We began our week with an exciting trip to the high school auditorium for an epic Blue Ribbon Award Celebration! It is a tremendous honor to have received this award and Forest View is so proud of the accomplishment. We have a tremendous group of students, families, and staff who are working together to help our students succeed! Our kiddos had a lot of fun being greeted by our parent and community members on a red carpet arrival to the assembly. We enjoyed listening to Mrs. Paulen, our Superintendent Mayor all speak on behalf of our school. Our assembly ended with a dance by our teachers and staff as well as a send off of Mr. Brown and Mrs. Simons as they headed to Washington D.C. to receive the award.

This week we finished working on our unit in reading about our Body Systems. You may have seen a variety of videos on seesaw already that have shown some awesome facts about our bodies! This week, we learned about why eating healthy and nutritious foods is another important factor in keeping us healthy. We discussed the Pyramid Pantry, where we learned the types of nutritious foods we should be eating and how much of those foods compared to others. You can see in the image below, not only is eating healthy important but also exercising is too! Of course sweet treats are fun at times and in moderation but definitely shouldn't be a regular part of our diet. Thank you for helping us to practice and maintain healthy eating habits by sending in healthy snacks and lunches!

We spend time each day getting some exercise breaks in to help us stay healthy!

Our focus has continued in math on adding and subtracting. On Friday, we began learning about fact families. These are 3 sets of numbers that work together to form addition and subtraction equations. All three numbers are 'related.' We learned a fun little song to sing along to help us remember how the partners and the whole number are related. See if your child remembers the song! If not that is OK, we will keep practicing! Here is a video to help understand the new concept!

You may have noticed that I have been sending some family letters home throughout the week. These letters are simply information to you about what skills we are working on in phonics and/or stories that we have read. You do not need to send them back to school each day. These family letters are meant simply as practice at home and as a communication tool to you so that you can know what we are working on here! If you do send it back, I will be happy to look at it and send it home again! Thank you for your commitment to further your child's learning at home!

On Friday, not only did we get to spend time learning our normal subjects, but we also got to discuss a holiday that was unfamiliar to some. Today we celebrated Veteran's Day. We discussed what it means to be a Veteran and how we can thank our Veterans who have served and fought for our freedom! We have so much to be grateful for! Here is one of the short videos that we watched today to help us learn about this holiday!

We also spent time on Friday creating Thankful Turkeys and writing about everything we are thankful for. While writing we are remembering to use CAPS, ends.!?, finger spaces, our best handwriting, as well as to ROL (read out loud) to make sure our story makes sense. We are learning to apply our new phonics skills and spelling patterns in our writing!

Here are a few more pictures from our week!

In Social Studies, we spent time writing about our families - telling how many people are in our nuclear family, what our houses and families look like, how we can help our families and our favorite holiday!

Next week we will get to interview a partner and learn, write and draw about their family. We will then get to compare and contrast our families to see how they are similar and different.

Some of our friends spent time this week finishing up their animal habitats for Science. They have been learning about the four basic things that animals need to survive!

With a little down time on Friday morning while some friends caught up on some work, we had time to play a favorite math game...garbage!

We are continuing to practice keeping track of our own personal items and taking care of them properly. This not only means taking care of our materials at our tables but also taking care of our backpacks, clothing, shoes, etc. With the added amount of gear we are needing to keep our bodies warm as we play outside, we are also finding it takes a couple extra minutes to make sure that we have our things put away so that our classroom is clean and our things do not get lost.
