First Grade SURGEONS!!
Yes you read that correctly.... we were SURGEONS today!!!! Our firsties were brought back to class after gym today to find our room had been transformed into an operating room!!! We were even equipped with surgical masks, sterile gloves and bandaids!!!
We have been learning about how to read and write contractions in spelling and phonics. We have learned that when we read and write, sometimes we can take two words, carefully remove some letters and put them together to make a new word! Well.....today they learned how to be surgeons and perform surgery on those words....bandaging them back together in order to make a new word!
We discussed how surgeons work with a very steady hand to make sure that they make the right cuts and ensure that their patient remains healthy.....well we made sure to do that today as well! We made sure to make careful and precise cuts, to make sure we were only removing the letters we no longer needed and then we were able to fix up our 'patients' with a bandaid, putting our new word together, and they were as good as new!!!
Our first grade surgeons then brought their words to the chief surgeon (aka Mrs. Quist) for final approval to ensure their patient was healthy and ready to go....some had to go back and fix a few things up but were good as new in no time!!!!
Sure, we almost lost a couple of patients along the way....some of those contractions were tricky to figure out....but we received some assists from fellow surgeons to make necessary repairs!!!!
It sure was a blast! I hope you were able to hear all about it when your child came home today...and who knows....there may be some future doctors and nurses in the mix here!!!
