First Grade Market
Our First Grade Market was a big success!!!! I would like to send out a huge THANK YOU to everyone for your participation and help in our culminating project based learning project to help wrap our our economics unit in social studies! Our first graders got to try their hand at being producers/consumers, as well as apply their knowledge of goods/services and supply/demand. These kiddos worked hard with YOUR help to design and create some AMAZING goods to sell. Not only that but they were also able to be a part of a bigger picture, which helped blend families and peers through a fun hands on learning experience!!! The kids came all week bursting with excitement as they delivered the goods they had made and then worked to create their posters to help with marketing during the sale.
Thursday brought on a ton of cheers and laughter as students set up their market stands, spread out their goods and awaited the mass of parents, teachers and students who would be shopping throughout the morning. When the doors opened at 9:30, our kiddos could barely contain their joy as parents began filling the gym, followed closely behind by groups of excited Forest View students. I am happy to say that we had 56 family members in attendance this morning as well as 200+ students and staff members who all came to shop.
It was amazing to see the business decisions these young entrepreneurs began making as the shopping commenced. There were many students who decided they had priced their goods too high and taking into consideration our lessons on supply and demand they determined they had better reduce the cost of their item to ensure they could sell their items successfully. As the morning continued, we had students learn about bargaining and how to make put their goods on sale to help entice buyers. One friend even decided that selling his bracelets at buy one get one free was a great way to help sell his remaining goods!
When our market closed for business, first grade students were able to come back to their classrooms and spend some of their hard earned 'money' at Mrs. Powell and Mrs. Quist's class stores. The students were all able to purchase a new book as well as browse and buy other fun items including games, puzzles, toys, etc.
You can take a look at all of the fun we had and would like to again say THANK YOU for all of your hard work and participation in our collaborative project. We are so grateful for all of your support and your willingness to collaborate and work with your child at home to help make this learning experience a success! Mrs. Powell and I are excited for all of the opportunities we have had to collaborate with you so far this year and are excited for what is yet to come!
