It's TIME to Learn!

Have you heard of the exciting opportunity we had this week to explore volcanoes and geysers?! We have been learning about the earth in Reading for the last couple of weeks and after learning all about volcanoes and geysers, we were able to extend our understanding through a project based learning experience! The class has learned about three very important factors involved in the formation of the earth and the earth's layers. These include HEAT, PRESSURE, and TIME.

After learning about how those three things affect volcanoes and geysers, our class was able to create their own! On Monday, students used clay to form their own volcanoes. Students knew that their volcanoes needed to have a magma chamber as well as a vent for their magma to erupt from. Then on Tuesday, after the clay had time to dry, the class enjoyed being able to use baking soda and vinegar to cause a reaction in their volcano and watch their lava spill out onto their plates. Students had to imagine that as their were adding more ingredients to their volcano that more heat and pressure was building up, causing the eruptions!

Tuesday's adventures also included experimenting with a homemade geyser! Our class spent time this week writing and recording similarities and differences between volcanoes and geysers on Seesaw. Make sure to check out your child's portfolio for their comparisons (and so much more)! You can see a small clip of our geyser fun here:

This week in math we have also started learning about TIME! In first grade we will learn how to tell time to the hour and half hour. Our class has been working hard to learn all about clocks (hands, faces, etc.) and telling time on both analog and digital clocks! Our friends have worked on telling time, writing time and labeling correct times in a variety of ways this week. Make sure to visit Seesaw to see how your child labeled the times shown on analog clocks on the digital clocks provided!

It is always fun to use the Seesaw app in different ways. We are always finding new ways to show our learning, whether it be in videos, voice recordings, labeling or comments left to assignments or friends uploaded assignments. We are always learning and always showing what we know!

We have watched some fun videos to help us learn how to tell time to the hour. You can watch them below:

We will continue practicing telling time next week and will also move on to shapes and measuring! Have fun telling time this weekend!
