"Spooky" Stories and a Pumpkin Book Report
We have been busy this week learning to be authors and working on being good writers! On Monday, we had the opportunity to create some fun Halloween Frankenstein monsters for the Hallway. After, we were able to practice our first grade writing skills by telling stories about our monsters. We worked on describing and telling all about our monsters. Friends described their monsters as being silly, nice, crazy, mean and scary. They also told what their monsters liked to do. Some liked to hand out candy and go trick or treating. Others also named their monsters!
I love how unique each Frankenstein is!
We have been working hard on our first grade writer's checklist as well. This means we are trying our best to include CAPS (at the beginning of a sentence), ends.!? (after each sentence), finger spaces, our best handwriting, and
3+ sentences!
On Wednesday, we had our first visit from out Fourth Grade Reading Buddies! We try to get together once a month for some fun reading time/activities with our buddies. We started by hearing a fun Halloween story from Mrs. Simons. She read the story Frankie Stein, by Lola M. Schaefer. You can listen to the story read here:
This week, the fourth graders brought a fun ghost story page and helped our friends write spooky Halloween stories! Our class became the authors (with some help from the fourth graders for ideas) and dictated the stories while their buddy wrote everything down! I hope you all enjoyed their spooky stories when they brought them home!
After they all wrote their stories, our buddies had the chance to read the stories to the class. Not everyone chose to read their stories but we sure enjoyed the stories we heard!
We were especially excited to work on our Pumpkin "Book Reports" this week! In class, we worked on writing down various story elements (something we are working on telling about during Knowledge) on our trick-or-treat candy pieces. We wrote the title of our stories, the author and illustrator, setting, plot, and something we enjoyed about the story on individual "candy" pieces so that when we brought our pumpkins down to display them for the school, people could trick-or-treat for story elements!
It was so fun seeing everyone bring in their pumpkins this week! They were so proud of their hard work and all of the effort they put in to creating their main character! THANK YOU for your participation from home and helping them connect with their learning at school! I am excited to see the continued collaboration! Make sure to check out your child's Seesaw account this weekend for their latest post about their pumpkin book reports!!!!
We also had some fun this week taking some selfies to add to our school selfie board!
We can't wait for our Halloween hike next week and the fun that we will have. I am excited to work on some fun halloween projects next week as well. Even with all the fun we are looking forward to it is still VERY important to be respectful listeners and follow ALL of our classroom directions and expectations throughout the day. We needed frequent reminders and redirection this week for staying focused and participating as well as doing work independently. Hopefully we all come back on Monday recharged and rested and ready for a fun and busy week! Don't forget, there is no school next week Friday because of our Teacher In-Service day. You can always check out our homepage for important dates (this will be updated over the weekend).
